Fyvie Folk Club was first formed during the Folk Revival of the 1960's/70's, but faded away after running for a few years. However in 1992, a handful of like minded Folk enthusiasts got together and decided to reform the Club, advertising in the local press to try to gather some support.
On Wednesday October 7th, 1992 the newly formed Folk Club opened its doors to the general public in the Vale Hotel, Fyvie and the present incarnation of Fyvie Folk Club was born.
The constitution of the Club is centred on encouraging new and youthful talent and a feature of the Folk nights has always been, free admission and an open programme of performers. The compere compiles the programme "on the hoof", as performers turn up, with a few regular members providing the performance base of the evening. On occasion, the evening is given over to a visiting band or artiste and again, admission to these evenings is free.
Each year around the end of August beginning of September the Club holds its annual Festival, during which open sessions, concerts and a ceilidh are held.
Since its beginnings, the Club has gone from strength to strength and has brought some very well known mainstream artistes to the area in concert including, Eric Bogle, Dick Gaughan, Mike Silver and Aly Bain, to name but a few. The Club has also hosted artistes from other countries such as "Myllarit", a Folk Band from the Russian/Finnish border province of Karelia.
Local culture is also supported and encouraged at Fyvie and the local dialect, "Doric" is regularly given an airing via songs and poetry. Each year in October, the Doric Society holds a Festival to celebrate and keep the dialect alive and well and Fyvie Folk Club supports this by hosting a Doric evening, where a whole night's entertainment is given over to Doric performers.
The Club itself has produced a good mix of Folk artistes and was the first Scottish Folk Club to participate in the first and second Russian/Scottish Folk Festivals in 1997 and 1998 respectively, sponsored by the Moscow Caledonian Club. Club members performed in concerts in Moscow and St. Petersburg and also took part in the second Moscow Highland Games! In addition, those who went to Russia were given the full cultural tour by their hosts, visiting attractions like the Kremlin, the Hermitage and Peter the Great's Summer Palace in St Petersburg and generally seeing sights that they had only previously seen in James Bond films etc!
Club meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month and there is a Committee meeting on the second Wednesday, which is usually followed by an open session. All are welcome to both. |
